Patience vs. Accountability Isn’t a Choice

As leaders, we are constantly walking this line:

How long do you give someone to figure it out… before it becomes something you need to address?

I’ve been on both sides of it.

I’ve waited too long, telling myself I was being patient, when really, I was just avoiding the conversation.

And I’ve pushed too hard, too fast, and watched someone shut down who probably just needed a little more clarity or support.

It’s easy to drift to one side, and the trick is learning how to balance both.

Patience. Slowing Down to Understand

Patience, at least for me, isn’t about lowering the bar.

It’s about taking a little time to understand what’s actually going on.

Is it a skill gap?
Did I not set clear expectations?
Are they unsure of themselves?
Or are they just not putting in the effort?

I’ve found that if I don’t take the time to figure that out, I tend to respond the wrong way.

Accountability.  Being Clear (Early)

Accountability used to feel like something I had to “ramp up” when things weren’t going well. That’s where I got it wrong.

Now I try to think about it more as being clear from the start and staying consistent.

What does good work look like?
What matters most?
What’s not negotiable?

When that’s clear early, we don’t end up having big, heavy conversations later.

We just have normal ones, with better progress.

Where I Still Catch Myself Sometimes

If I’m being honest, this is where I still slip.

I’ll see something that’s a little off and think, “Let’s give it a little more time.”

Sometimes that’s the right call. Sometimes it’s not.

Because a week later, it’s still there… and now it’s a bigger deal than it needed to be.

That’s usually the signal that I waited too long.

What I Try to Do Now

Nothing earth shattering here. Just a few things I come back to:

  • Be really clear on expectations upfront

  • Say something early, even if it’s small

  • Try to understand before I react

  • Adjust how I support based on what the person actually needs

I don’t always get it right. But when I do these consistently, things tend to work better.

One More Thought

I don’t think this is about choosing between being patient or holding people accountable.

Good teams really need both.

Patience builds trust. Accountability sets the standard.

And I’ve learned when you can balance the two, with a consistent approach,
you get a team that not only performs, but actually improves along the way.
